Cappelen Dimyr

Cappelen Dimyr is a Scandinavian textile atelier based in Copenhagen, creating handmade rugs, tapestries, and textile objects that bring together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design. Established by sisters Maja and Ellen Dixdotter, interior architect Jacob Holst, and entrepreneur Kristoffer Hernemyr, the collective draws on backgrounds in fashion, interiors, and branding. Its name combines elements of the founders’ names, reflecting the personal relationships at the heart of the studio.

The atelier introduced its first rug collection in 2019. Maja’s experience in fashion design and Ellen’s background in branding helped shape an approach to textiles that considers texture, proportion, and character as closely as function. Their shared sensibility balances Scandinavian simplicity with a more expressive, bohemian spirit, creating pieces distinguished by natural tones, sculptural shapes, and richly textured surfaces.

Designed in Scandinavia and handcrafted by skilled artisans in India, the rugs combine traditional hand knotting and hand weaving techniques. Natural fibers, including unbleached New Zealand wool and linen, give the work its tactile character. Deep pile, irregular outlines, and expressive fringes turn the textile surface into a composition of volume and movement, allowing the material and the maker’s hand to remain visible.

Cappelen Dimyr approaches design through a philosophy of slow creation, developing pieces intended to remain meaningful beyond seasonal trends. Close relationships with artisans and respect for traditional techniques are central to its practice. As the collection has expanded into wall tapestries, runners, and other textiles, the atelier has maintained its interest in the balance between restraint and expression, celebrating the subtle imperfections that distinguish handmade objects.

The collective has received coverage in publications including Vogue and COVER, and its work appeared in “Centuries,” Emerson Bailey’s exhibition during Copenhagen’s 3daysofdesign in 2024. Presented alongside historic and contemporary Scandinavian design, its textiles express an ongoing dialogue between craft heritage and modern form.
