ITZ
ITZ is a design studio and woodworking workshop based in Bacalar, Mexico, founded by Polish-born designer Ania Wolowska. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Poznań and CENTRO in Mexico City, Wolowska developed her practice through a close relationship with the landscapes, tropical woods, and craft traditions of southeastern Mexico. The studio’s name draws on the Maya concept of itz, associated with the sacred essence of things, reflecting its respect for materials and the knowledge involved in transforming them.
Wolowska finds inspiration in nature, Japanese woodworking techniques, ancestral cultures, and rituals. Her designs emphasize simple forms that reveal the character of the wood, allowing grain, tonal variation, natural edges, and small irregularities to contribute to each piece. Carefully developed joints combine structural strength with visual clarity, while finishes based on natural oils and waxes protect the surface without obscuring its texture. The resulting furniture preserves a tangible connection to the tree from which it was made.
Collaboration with regional carpenters and artisans is central to ITZ’s practice. Some members of its team carry knowledge passed down through generations, while the workshop also provides a setting for learning the trade. Women undertake the detailed sanding and finishing that help define the furniture’s tactile quality. The studio sources its timber from local ejidos with responsible forestry management programs and certifications, connecting its commitment to durable furniture with the communities and forests that support its production.
The studio’s collections bring these principles into seating, tables, and storage. Muna, presented during Design Week Mexico in 2015, explores soft lines and rounded edges across a chair, table, and console. The Ocum tables received the Inédito award for Best Design in 2016. Collaboration also opens new directions: Noolii, designed by Tania Álvarez Zaldívar and produced by ITZ, translates a selection of parametrically generated sculptural geometries into tessellated wooden forms.
ITZ has presented its work at WantedDesign in New York, FOG Design+Art in San Francisco, ZONAMACO, and exhibitions at Mexico City’s Museo Franz Mayer. Its recognition includes first place in furniture design at the 2015 CLAP awards and an honorable mention for social impact at Inédito in 2017. Through this practice, Wolowska brings contemporary design into sustained dialogue with regional craftsmanship, creating furniture intended to remain meaningful through years of use.

K’áan Ottoman by ITZ translates traditional hammock weaving into a sculptural footrest. Handcrafted in Bacalar, Mexico, its lathe-turned solid wood frame supports a flexible surface woven from fine nylon thread by artisan Agustín Caamal Chimal. Precise joinery and small bronze bolts provide stability while allowing the piece to be disassembled for transport. Rooted in the hammock’s relaxed comfort, K’áan brings regional weaving and woodworking traditions together in a light, open construction.
