Jasmine Cadenhead

Jasmine Cadenhead is a Canadian artist working in Mexico City whose practice connects sculpture, functional objects, and material experimentation. Drawing on her background in trauma therapy and her interest in biology, she explores the relationship between human memory and the physical traces of time in nature. Her work considers how experiences can be preserved and transformed, giving tangible form to the shifting impressions that shape our understanding of the past.

Natural pigments, resin, volcanic stone, and charred wood form the foundation of her sculptural language. Through casting and layering, Cadenhead brings different textures and densities into a single composition, drawing parallels between geological formations and the accumulation of personal experience. Sediment, waterlines, erosion, and renewal inform this approach. Embedded fragments become markers of time, while translucent surfaces allow the viewer to look beneath the exterior and discover the layers held within.

Her research into colour includes an exploration of Mexico’s natural dyes and textile traditions. Working with cochineal and indigo, she has investigated how pigments interact with fabric and resin, suspending hand-dyed linen within cast cubes. These works preserve the folds and colour of textiles within solid forms, extending her interest in the relationship between fragile materials and lasting impressions. Red became a particular focus, opening an investigation into its cultural meanings and its place in Mexican visual traditions.

This material exploration also takes the form of collectible furniture and lighting. Works such as The Space Between Us and Masa combine Shou Sugi Ban wood with pigmented glass resin, bringing charred surfaces into dialogue with translucent colour. Light introduces another dimension to these objects, revealing internal details and emphasising differences between opaque and transparent materials. Their practical roles as tables and illuminated objects bring her sculptural investigations into everyday spaces.

Cadenhead’s wider practice includes DESCANSA, a textile project developed with Mimi Dang around natural colour, rest, and everyday rituals. In an interview with Les Couleurs, she also discussed presenting a resin and textile sculpture at Museo Jumex through a collaboration with México Vivo. Across these activities, her interest in material processes remains closely connected to expression, care, and the ways art allows experiences to be communicated beyond words.
