Luisa Restrepo
Luisa Restrepo is a Colombian glass artist and designer based in Mexico City, where she founded her studio, El Taller, in 2005. Her practice spans contemporary jewellery, collectible design, sculptural objects, installations, and performance. After studying industrial design in Medellín, she pursued Three Dimensional Design with a specialisation in glass at the University of Wolverhampton in England, later completing a master’s degree in Design Studies at CENTRO in Mexico City.
Restrepo’s work explores rhythm, pattern, proportion, and excess through the transformation of glass. Specialising in warm glass techniques, she works with processes including fusing, slumping, casting, and engraving, selecting each method according to the possibilities it offers a particular idea. Her pieces examine both the physical qualities of the material and the ways people relate to objects, moving between intimate works worn on the body and expansive compositions that engage architectural space.
Material reuse has become an important part of this exploration. An early experiment with fragments from a broken piece led her towards jewellery, while more recent wall works extend this process of transformation. In Cumular(ia), Retales, and Seriada, remnants from previous artworks become new compositions through fused and precisely cut glass. These works connect memory and material, allowing traces of one creation to generate another. Cumular(ia) was acquired by the Chrysler Museum of Art in December 2025.
Her international practice includes residencies at North Lands Creative Glass in Scotland and WheatonArts in the United States, alongside teaching at Pilchuck Glass School and UrbanGlass. She received first prize at the Bogotá Museum of Glass Biennale in 2011 and won the Bullseye Glass Artist category of The Glass Prize in 2022. Her work has been presented at ZONAMACO, Design Week Mexico, and exhibitions internationally.
Restrepo’s creative journey was featured in Forbes Colombia’s 2023 profile “Luisa Restrepo la artista colombiana seducida por el vidrio,” which explored her technical experimentation and collaborative installations. UrbanGlass has also published a conversation examining her approach to upcycling and her conceptual investigation of excess, highlighting the connection between material research and artistic expression in her practice.
