Monolith
Monolith is a New York furniture and collectible design studio founded in 2022 by Marc Personick. Originally a digital interface designer, Personick developed the studio from a longstanding interest in sculptural furniture and the idea of opening a gallery. His fascination with substantial forms, simple geometry, and pieces expressed through a single material became the foundation of Monolith’s design approach.
Working with volcanic stone, travertine, oak, and walnut, the studio creates furniture and objects defined by bold proportions and a restrained use of form. Its Brutalist influences emerge through the weight and presence of each piece, while curves and carefully balanced compositions introduce softness. Natural texture remains central to the work, allowing the character of stone and wood to shape the experience of each design.
Monolith collaborates closely with artisans in Mexico, connecting contemporary design with skilled handwork. Its debut collection, Sanctuary, was produced in a Guadalajara workshop, with pieces carved by hand and stone surfaces sandblasted to reveal their texture. The collection explores how substantial materials can become functional sculptures, with benches that also serve as display surfaces and side tables that can function as stools.
Introduced during Mexico City’s Zona Maco in 2023, Sanctuary established the studio’s identity through nine designs spanning seating, tables, consoles, and lighting. The collection’s name reflects Personick’s sense that the pieces possess a ritual quality, suggesting objects that might belong within a temple or desert landscape. Its debut received coverage in publications including Hypebeast and Design Milk with OASIS exhibition by Casa AnKan at Alcova during Art Basel Miami 2025.
Alongside Personick’s own designs, Monolith works with architects and designers internationally, expanding its collection within a consistent sculptural language. The resulting pieces bring together practical use, material expression, and the presence of collectible art, with Mexican craftsmanship remaining central to the studio’s work.
