NISH

NISH is a furniture design studio based in Cape Town, South Africa, founded by Tanisha Neill in 2022. Her practice brings together an education in interior design, a master’s degree in Product Design and Design Innovation completed in Madrid, and professional experience with ARRCC and OKHA. Launched at Decorex, the studio grew from Neill’s desire to develop her own furniture, combining practical knowledge of interiors with an interest in sculptural form and skilled craftsmanship.

Before entering design, Neill trained in classical ballet and contemporary dance, developing a sensitivity to rhythm, balance, and storytelling through movement. These experiences continue to inform her approach to furniture, where proportion and the relationship between individual elements shape each composition. Her work explores the tension between precise design and the natural variations introduced by materials and handcraft, allowing each piece to acquire character through its making and use.

Solid wood, natural stone, and tactile leather form an important part of the studio’s material vocabulary. NISH approaches these materials with an emphasis on durability and the qualities that distinguish one surface from another. Grain, texture, and subtle irregularities remain part of the finished object’s identity. This attention to material supports furniture that can stand independently within a room or become part of a broader interior composition, balancing sculptural presence with everyday function.

The Keeva Bench illustrates this approach through a multidirectional seating design available in wood and leather interpretations. Its ash version can be finished with a carbon stain that preserves the visibility of the grain, while an iroko version accommodates outdoor use. Custom choices of wood, stain, and surface texture allow the piece to respond to different settings. Alongside seating such as the Kyra Bench, the Neave tables extend the collection’s material exploration into limestone and marble.

Collaboration offers another avenue for Neill’s practice. Her B D screen, developed for an Infinity Surfaces furniture collaboration, takes its name from her grandfather, bringing a personal reference into the design. NISH has been featured in House & Garden South Africa and VISI, with interviews tracing Neill’s transition from dance and interiors to furniture. These profiles explore a practice shaped by creative experimentation, professional experience, and a close relationship with the objects and spaces of daily life.
