Neal Aronowitz
Neal Aronowitz is an American artist and designer based in Portland, Oregon, whose practice spans sculptural furniture and lighting. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he studied art and architecture at the City University of New York and Massachusetts College of Art, exploring disciplines including metalwork, glassmaking, woodworking, ceramics, and photography. In 2014, he established his design studio, developing ideas accumulated through decades of drawing and material exploration.
His work investigates movement, balance, gravity, and the expressive possibilities of materials. Through flowing curves and carefully resolved structures, Aronowitz creates functional pieces that retain the presence of sculpture. Nature and its underlying forces inform his approach, alongside an interest in how objects can encourage contemplation and a personal connection with their surroundings.
Aronowitz is particularly recognized for his experiments with Concrete Canvas, a flexible fabric impregnated with cement that hardens when hydrated. Adapting this material to furniture required the development of specialized casting and forming techniques. His Whorl series transforms it into continuous, ribbonlike forms, with surfaces finished by hand using pigmented cement mortar and brought to a high polish. The resulting pieces give concrete an unexpected sense of fluidity and lightness.
Beyond concrete, his practice explores wood, metal, stone, and glass. The Enso Table draws inspiration from the expressive gesture of Japanese ink painting, while the Viva Table examines the triangle through relationships between weight, mass, and balance. Across these different materials, his designs combine practical use with an ongoing investigation of form and structure.
His Whorl Table received a People’s Choice distinction at the 2017 AZ Awards, while the Whorl Console won a 2017 GRAY Award and a 2018 Interior Design Best of Year Award. The console’s creation became the subject of the documentary “How to Bend Concrete in 108 Easy Steps,” which received awards at international film festivals. His work has also been featured in publications including Elle Décor and Surface, where he was profiled in its Designer of the Day series.
