NOOM
NOOM is a Ukrainian design studio founded in 2017 by industrial designer Kateryna Sokolova and designer and entrepreneur Arkadii Vartanov. Based in Kyiv, the studio creates sculptural furniture, lighting, and decorative objects that unite artistic expression with everyday function. Their partnership brings together Sokolova’s experience in international product design and Vartanov’s background in manufacturing and craftsmanship.
As cofounder and creative director, Sokolova shapes NOOM’s design identity through a balance of geometry, proportion, and material experimentation. A graduate of the Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts, she has collaborated with brands including Ligne Roset, Forestier, and Bolia, and received a Red Dot Design Award in 2015. This multidisciplinary background informs the studio’s approach to objects as both functional pieces and sculptural compositions.
Art history is central to NOOM’s collections. The Suprematic series of vases and lighting draws inspiration from the geometric compositions of Kazimir Malevich, translating circles, planes, and intersecting shapes into three dimensional objects. Its vases incorporate geometric elements that also support and separate flowers, making their artistic structure part of their function. The Gropius furniture collection, dedicated to the Bauhaus school’s centenary, continues this exploration through rounded volumes and arrangements of spheres and cylinders.
Produced in Ukraine, NOOM’s pieces combine traditional handwork with contemporary manufacturing techniques. The studio works across metal, wood, glass, stone, and upholstery, overseeing production with close attention to construction and finish. Metal treatments are a particular area of exploration, with specialist oxidation and patination processes creating distinctive colors and surface effects for limited editions. This attention to material gives each collection a character that extends beyond its silhouette.
Since its debut at Dutch Design Week in 2017, NOOM has presented its work at international events including Maison & Objet and Milan Design Week. Its first furniture collection was shown at Maison & Objet in 2020, and its Flock chair received the 2024 NYCxDESIGN Award in the Contract Seating category. Across its collections, the studio pursues a lasting relationship between people and objects, creating expressive pieces intended to be lived with, valued, and passed between generations.

NOOM
Gropius Military Low Chair by NOOM is a limited edition of eight, designed by Kateryna Sokolova in collaboration with Nataliya Bakulina and Antonina Latayko. Its cushioned wood and plywood structure is covered in camouflage netting with more than 4,000 knots, woven using a technique developed by volunteers at the VinnSolard Center. Combining a peacetime design with wartime craft, the chair reflects how Russia’s war in Ukraine has transformed everyday life and design.
