Raka Studio
Raka Studio is a design studio based in Lahore, Pakistan, founded by brothers Saleh, Waleed, and Rayan. Working across sculptural furniture, lighting, and decorative objects, the brothers developed their practice through hands-on experimentation, creating their earliest pieces at their family home. Self-taught as designers and makers, they built a shared approach around exploring wood’s possibilities, allowing discoveries in the workshop to shape their creative direction. Their work brings together the expressive freedom of sculpture and the practical demands of everyday use.
Nature provides a starting point for the studio’s fluid forms. The transition from a tree trunk into a branch, the movement of bending wood, and the continuity between organic structures inform their approach to proportion and construction. A piece often begins with a functional intention—a table, lamp, or console—and a central design idea, with its final shape developed directly on the making rig. This close relationship between designing and building allows the material’s behavior to influence the outcome. For the brothers, a successful object must retain its usefulness while offering an individual artistic expression.
Woodworking lies at the center of this practice. Through stack lamination, thin strips of wood are layered and glued before being ground and sanded by hand into sculptural forms. The process requires sustained attention, with individual works taking days or weeks to complete. Across the studio’s Vrksa and Fluentum collections, this material exploration extends to seating, consoles, center tables, floor lamps, and chandeliers, connecting different functions through a consistent interest in movement, curvature, and carefully shaped surfaces.
Collaboration has opened further directions for the studio. Its Spring 2026 collection with Courtney McLeod of New York’s Right Meets Left Interior Design combines Raka’s craftsmanship with McLeod’s expressive use of color and playful proportions. Inspired by the imaginative world of Alice in Wonderland, the collection comprises a daybed, vanity chair, wall console, mirror, and light fixture, translating a shared interest in sculptural design into five functional objects.
Raka Studio has presented its work internationally, including at Shanghai’s West Bund Art Fair in 2021 and in a dedicated exhibition at CoBrA Gallery in 2022. Its designs have also appeared in Architectural Digest Middle East, whose coverage of a Dubai residence highlighted a Raka lamp and entrance bench within an interior celebrating Pakistani art and design. These presentations place the brothers workshop practice within a wider conversation about contemporary craftsmanship and collectible furniture.
