Reuber Henning

Reuber Henning is a Berlin-based rug design studio founded by Franziska Henning, now Franziska Reuber, and Thorsten Reuber. Its creative approach brings together Franziska’s background in fine art and her collaboration with fellow artist and designer Birgit Krah. Through expressive color, thoughtful compositions, and traditional textile techniques, the studio creates handmade rugs designed to become lasting elements of an interior. Each design begins with a story, translating personal observations and artistic influences into texture and pattern.

The studio’s origins lie in an artwork Franziska conceived around the garden as a symbol of Eden, informed by memories of her grandmother’s garden. Seeking to translate the idea into a rug, she commissioned a workshop in Iran and later traveled there to collect the finished piece. The encounter introduced her to the possibilities of hand-knotting, richly varied yarns, and textile craftsmanship. This early experience developed into a practice in which gardens, historical textiles, music, cinema, and illustrations can all become starting points for a collection.

Reuber Henning’s hand-knotted rugs are produced in Nepal, where skilled artisans work with materials including Tibetan highland wool and silk. Wool is combed and spun by hand, while traditional knotting techniques create the rugs’ soft, tactile surfaces. Washing, stretching, trimming, and finishing bring each composition into focus. Close collaboration with the workshop allows the designers to explore how different fibers, colors, and constructions affect the finished piece, keeping the knowledge and contribution of the makers central to the work.

The collections balance deliberate composition with spontaneity. The 4-Minute Rug series begins with drawings completed in less than four minutes, preserving the energy of quick gestures through carefully selected materials and colors. Homeland, from the Stripes collection, gives the weavers a direct creative role: using leftover yarn, individual makers determine the placement and width of their stripes. Each rug consequently records the decisions of the people who made it, giving variation an essential place within the design.

Customization extends this collaborative approach to individual interiors, with designs adaptable in color, dimensions, materials, and shape. The studio also works with Label STEP, whose monitoring supports fair working conditions and responsible production in the handmade rug industry. Through this combination of artistic curiosity, skilled making, and attention to the spaces their rugs inhabit.
