Samuel Latour

Samuel Latour is a French artist and sculptor based in Rabastens, near Toulouse, whose practice explores abstraction through materials and traditional craftsmanship. He trained for five years at École Boulle in Paris, specialising in artistic turning before developing his expertise in bronze. His professional experience includes working in the studios of Hervé Van der Straeten in Paris and Stefan Leo in Berlin, as well as Parisian art foundries producing sculptures for artists including Wang Keping and Manuela Zervudachi. He established his own workshop in Toulouse in 2016.

Latour describes his approach as “writing the volume,” translating gestures, lines, and geometric relationships into three dimensional forms. Working with bronze, wood, steel, and plaster, he combines casting, woodturning, and bronze chasing to explore rhythm, balance, and movement. Contrasts between smooth and textured surfaces, together with the marks left by tools, preserve a visible connection between each sculpture and the process of its creation.

His creative process relies on models, material trials, and repeated gestures, allowing forms to develop through direct experimentation. Columns, sculptural objects, and reliefs become opportunities to investigate how a technique can generate an expressive visual language. He cites Constantin Brancusi’s exploration of columns and repetition among his influences, alongside the work of Tony Cragg, David Mach, and Antony Gormley. Travels through Nepal, Myanmar, and Vietnam also introduced him to craft traditions that broadened his approach to making.

Latour’s work has been presented at COLLECTIBLE in Brussels, PAD Paris, and Révélations at the Grand Palais Éphémère. In 2023, Galerie Anne Jacquemin Sablon dedicated the solo exhibition “Traces” to his practice. His sculptures are held in private collections in France, the United States, and the Middle East. His work has also been explored in La Consigne’s “Dans l’atelier de : Samuel Latour” and LdG Art’s “Portrait d’artisans – Samuel Latour et Laura Demichelis,” offering insight into his workshop, influences, and experimental relationship with materials.
