SINGCHAN Design
SINGCHAN Design is a Chinese design studio founded in Guangzhou in 2020 by Sing Chan, also known as Chen Xingyu. Born in 1990, Chan graduated in Industrial Design from Guangzhou University in 2013 and later served as Design Director at Bentu Design before establishing his independent practice. Working across lighting, furniture, and objects, the studio draws on different civilisations and historical periods to create contemporary pieces that connect cultural memory with everyday life.
Chan’s upbringing in Panyu, a historic port district along the Pearl River, remains an important influence. Its waterways, old buildings, workshops, and exchanges with other cultures shaped his early understanding of craft and architecture. As urban development transformed these surroundings, he became increasingly interested in how design could carry local knowledge and traditions into the present. His approach combines historical observation with structural and material research, seeking new expressions for forms that might otherwise be overlooked or forgotten.
This relationship between heritage and experimentation appears throughout the studio’s collections. Early lighting designs reinterpret traditional roof tiles, while furniture draws on the spatial organisation of Chinese courtyards and the layered construction of pagodas. The Fragment lighting collection explores polished stainless steel and precisely cut glass, using reflection and refraction to create depth within structured compositions. Its architectural forms give light a physical presence, allowing the surrounding space to become part of the work.
The Monument collection develops these architectural interests through sculptural seating. Monument 01 takes inspiration from ancient stone markers, combining a welded metal structure, a stone-textured lacquer finish, and cowhide upholstery. Later upholstered variations, designed by Sing Chan and Yixuan Zhou, translate its substantial armrests and reclining profile into softer forms. Across these pieces, the studio considers how material contrasts and carefully shaped volumes can bring the presence of a monument into a domestic setting.
SINGCHAN Design has presented its work at Design Shanghai and at Alcova during Milan Design Week 2024, where its Aloof Light installation occupied the historic setting of Villa Bagatti Valsecchi. The studio was featured in Sight Unseen’s “6 Up-and-Coming Chinese Designers to Watch,” while DesignWanted highlighted its Alcova presentation. In 2025, SINGCHAN opened its first public space in a century-old building on Shanghai’s Bund, creating a setting for its own collections and exchanges with other artists and designers.

SINGCHAN Design
Monument 01 by Singchan is a sculptural seat inspired by ancient stone markers, defined by sharp edges and generous sloping armrests. Its precisely welded metal frame is finished with a textured lacquer that evokes the surface of stone. A black cowhide seat cushion provides a soft contrast to the architectural structure, bringing together metal craftsmanship, tactile materials, and monumental form.
