Anne Nowak

Anne Nowak is a Danish multidisciplinary artist based in Copenhagen. Born on the island of Bornholm, she grew up surrounded by rocky coastlines, forests, and dark skies that continue to inform her work. She studied textile printing and ceramics in Denmark, alongside further artistic studies in New York. Her practice spans painting, sculpture, lighting, mirrors, cyanotype, and installations, bringing an experimental approach to materials into dialogue with her fascination for nature and the cosmos.

Nowak explores impermanence, memory, and the relationships between light and darkness, life and death. Drawing on the sea, planetary forms, spiritual mythology, and inner landscapes, she creates atmospheric compositions that invite reflection. Horizons, celestial bodies, and floating organic forms recur throughout her work, suggesting spaces that extend beyond their physical boundaries. Colour plays a central role, translating observations and personal experiences into subtle gradients and luminous surfaces.

Her process moves between screen printing, drawing, spray painting, and cyanotype, using materials including paper, textiles, stone, and mirrors. Each technique offers a different way to explore perception: sprayed pigments create soft transitions, while reflective surfaces incorporate the surrounding space. Works such as Floating Mirage, a double-sided mirror, and Moon Light, made from hand-painted aluminium, extend these investigations into objects that bring sculptural form and function together.

Her collaboration with Arturel translates this interest in atmosphere into the Hazy collection. Inspired by the changing colours of the sea and the horizon around Bornholm, its compositions hover between recognisable landscapes and abstraction. Gentle shifts in colour evoke mist, distance, and changing daylight. The collection continues Nowak’s exploration of how an image can suggest a place or sensation without defining it, leaving room for the viewer’s own associations.

Nowak has exhibited internationally in cities including New York, Beijing, and Warsaw, and has created commissions for Marriott Copenhagen and Roskilde Festival. Her solo exhibition Coming Home at Bornholm’s Grønbechs Gård draws on her childhood in Nexø during the fishing crisis of the 1980s. Combining cyanotypes of local seaweed with granite, mirrors, and other materials, the exhibition connects the island’s changing identity with broader questions of loss, memory, and renewal.
