Métamo
Métamo is a contemporary furniture studio based in Mérida, Yucatán, founded by Manuel Eduardo Peón Ceballos and Yadir Iván Chan Martín. The designers began working together in 2021 through a carpentry workshop that became a space for material experimentation and creative collaboration. In 2024, they established Métamo, developing a practice focused on sculptural wooden furniture. Their experience as makers continues to inform a close relationship between the development of a design and its physical construction.
The landscapes of Yucatán provide a central reference for the studio’s forms. Cenotes, coastlines, mangroves, and lagoons inform its curved silhouettes, alongside an interest in Maya architecture and cultural traditions. These influences are translated into the structure and proportions of furniture, giving natural contours a functional role. Métamo also draws on archaeological references, considering how forms associated with the past can become objects that participate in contemporary life.
Wood is the foundation of this exploration. Working with materials including rosa morada, oak, and walnut, the studio emphasizes careful shaping, manual joinery, and production in small series. The grain and surface of the timber contribute to each piece’s identity, while restrained detailing keeps attention on its overall form. Natural and darkened finishes offer different expressions of the same design, allowing the material’s warmth or a more pronounced silhouette to define its presence within a room.
The Venus and Marte chairs express the studio’s interest in curves as structural elements, combining sculptural profiles with the practical requirements of seating. Its broader collection includes the Axis coffee table, Merea chair and stool, and Kairo, conceived as a coffee table or bench. Made in Mexico, these pieces extend Métamo’s approach across different domestic functions, with selected options for wood, finish, and cushions allowing individual designs to respond to the setting in which they will be used.
Métamo presented Venus and Marte in the emerging design section of ZONAMACO in 2026. Following Mexico City Art Week, Wallpaper included the studio in its selection of five emerging Mexican designers to know, highlighting its organic forms and connection to Yucatán. Architectural Digest México also featured the founders’ work, examining their beginnings in carpentry and attention to artisanal production. These presentations have brought wider visibility to a practice rooted in regional landscapes, woodworking, and contemporary furniture design.
